In the wonderful acoustic of St Martin’s church, Sherwood, join us for a unique, intruiging and varied econcert. Here’s what we hope you will enjoy:
While the Nottingham Chamber Singers perform some works ‘a cappella’, the incredibly talented duo of saxophonist John Barker and organist Henry Parkes weave sublime melodies into and around much of the programme.
The first half of the concert features music by extraordinary but under-heard female composers, including 11th century mystic Hildegard von Bingen (with a contemporary twist), 19th century Ethel Smyth and award-wining 21st century Kerensa Briggs. What better way to celebrate the week of International Women’s Day (8 March) than with music by a brilliant array of women?
After the interval, voices, saxophone and organ combine for James Whitbourn’s compelling Son of God Mass, composed in 2001. Reviewers have described this music as ‘startling, serene, soaring, meditative, riveting and inspiring.’ At the end of the concert, let us know if you agree!
John Barker – saxophone
Henry Parkes – organ
We recommend buying tickets in advance, though we usually have some available on the door. The quality of the choir’s performances have been attracting great audiences this season.
You might also enjoy this wonderful upcoming concert with both the Nottingham Chamber Singers and the Nottingham Festival Chorus.
