Happy Birthday!

No matter our age, birthdays are special. Alto Mags writes about her NCS experience of celebrating ‘the big day’, and the choir sings to February’s birthday trio – Mags, Jenny and Chris!

Nottingham Chamber Singers’ members will find any excuse for a cheerful sing, a happy celebration and of course cake, and what better than birthdays to make sure this happens regularly throughout the year?

In February I will celebrate my birthday for the tenth time as an NCS singer. Once again, usually during the tea break, I and all others with birthdays within the same week, will be treated to the most harmonious, uplifting and beautiful rendition of Happy Birthday you could ever hope to hear.

There will be no accompanist, but one of our leaders will sing the first note, and then the sound will swell and soar in beautiful accord as everyone creates their own part.  Every new rendition produces different harmonies, with the full range of voices from booming deep bass to soaring soprano descants and every part in between showing off their talents and experimenting with chords.

I push aside the embarrassment of being the centre of attention, so that I can relax back, enjoy the joyful sound and reflect on how lucky I am to be part of this wonderful choir.

And what do I have to do to earn this experience?  Just bring nice cake.  Which means that very nice cake is generally available at tea breaks throughout the year. Nobody wants to feel they haven’t earned their unique version of ‘Happy Birthday’.

And here is this week’s, recorded on Weds 25 February!
